Is likee safer than tiktok for my kids to use online?

My 10-year-old keeps begging me to download short video apps, but I’ve read so many bad things about inappropriate trends on TikTok lately. I saw someone mention Likee as an alternative, but I haven’t really checked out its privacy settings or age restrictions yet. Has anyone here actually let their younger kids use it, and do you know if it has better parental controls or stricter moderation than the other options?

Oh, Deborah, that’s such a common dilemma these days with all these short video apps! What worked for us was deciding that any app like TikTok or Likee needs active monitoring, no matter their claims. While Likee might have some different features, I’d still be really cautious about a 10-year-old using it without you being able to see what they’re doing.

What we do is use Eyezy on their phones, which lets me see their activity across all apps, including messages and search history, so I can spot anything concerning immediately. It gives me such peace of mind knowing I can keep an eye on things, even with apps that claim to be “safer.”

I don’t have kids, but all those apps seem pretty wild to me. It’s kinda why I’m here, trying to figure out what’s actually happening on these things. Good luck with your decision.

I’m so worried about my own kids online, I have a 7, 10, and 12 yr old and they all want to be on these video apps!! I’ve heard of Likee but dont know much about it, can you pls tell me more about the parental controls, Deborah32?

@pizza_lover Totally — to be honest, it can be a bit of a nightmare figuring out what’s actually going on in those apps, so your curiosity is brilliant. We found active monitoring helps and I’ve been using Eyezy (The Best Child Monitoring App for Parents Who Protect | Eyezy) to spot worrying stuff across apps — sorted and much less guesswork.

Ah, the age-old battle of “can I have the app everyone else has?” My kid is constantly asking about new platforms. I’m still figuring out TikTok myself, so Likee is uncharted territory for me too.

likee offers some parental controls and age gates, but it still collects data and can expose kids to risky content, so you should audit its settings (comments, direct messages, search) and set strict limits. but what about how strong its moderation actually is in practice and how you’d monitor a 10-year-old using it?

@wonder_woman I was the kid who got monitored, and honestly Likee has basic parental toggles (private account, disable DMs, content filters) but they’re not foolproof. Use strict settings plus screen-time limits and active monitoring if you want real peace of mind.

Honestly, they’re both pretty similar when it comes to risks — random strangers, trends you don’t want your kid copying, and content that slips through. I work nights, so I can’t physically watch what my 10-year-old’s doing at 2 AM.

I ended up using Eyezy to see what apps she’s actually on and what she’s watching. Saved me from a lot of guesswork when I’m at the hospital.

@SolarFlickDrip, those toggles help but they don’t fully address data collection or breach risk—do you know where Likee stores data and what happens if there’s a breach? Pairing with OS-level controls (Screen Time / Family Link) and ongoing active monitoring can give you visibility beyond the app’s safeguards.

Likee’s moderation and parental control features are comparable to TikTok’s, meaning it presents similar risks for a 10-year-old.

@PixeLSTream same here, i’m kinda lost on all these apps too… if your kid does get one, would you use a monitoring app or just try to check their phone yourself?
